Sleeping is one of the essential things to do to maintain our physical health or mental health. Not getting enough sleeping can cause lots of trouble for our bodies. Sadly, some people struggle with sleep disorders that cause them hard to sleep and not get enough sleep every day.

Sleep disorders are conditions when you find yourself hardly getting restful sleep daily. Sleep disorders can cause lots of bad things for your body, including sleepiness in the daytime and other symptoms. Some signs you may have a sleep disorder are often experiencing difficulty sleeping, constantly being tired during the day, and reduced ability to perform.

  1. Insomnia

One of the common sleep disorders everyone may be familiar with is insomnia. Insomnia is a condition that makes the sufferer experiencing hard to fall asleep or get a comfortable sleep. If you often go through falling asleep at the beginning but start waking up during the night or waking up earlier than usual, you may have insomnia. 

But there are still other conditions to say if you get insomnia. The symptoms of this sleep disorder are difficulty sleeping, waking up during the night, difficulty to return sleeping, feeling tired during the daytime, depressed mood, and having problems or issues with concentration and memories. 

Insomnia is divided into two types: short-term and chronic insomnia. Just like the name, short-term insomnia means insomnia that is just experienced for at least a few days or weeks. It is often caused by stress. Meanwhile, chronic insomnia means the sleep difficulty happens more often, at least three times a week for three months, or it can be longer.

  1. Sleep Apnea

The following sleeping disorder considered one of the common sleep disorders is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when people repeatedly experience breathing, stopping, and starting during sleeping. The symptoms of this disorder are loud snoring, hardly breathing while sleeping, waking up with a dry mouth, insomnia, morning headache, irritability, and concentration issues. 

There are three different types of sleep apnea, namely, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), and complex sleep apnea. OSA often happens when the throat muscles relax and block airflow to the lungs. Then, CSA occurs when the brain doesn’t send signals to control breathing. Meanwhile, complex sleep apnea is people with OSA then change to CSA. 

  1. Narcolepsy

The next sleep disorder is narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the sufferers’ ability to wake and sleep. The symptoms of narcolepsy are excessive daytime sleepiness, which makes it hard to do daily activities, cataplexy, or problems ranging from slurred speech to body collapse and hallucinations.

There are still some conditions that are considered narcolepsy symptoms. Other symptoms are sleep paralysis, which makes it hard to move your body while sleeping, and disrupted sleep. Disrupted sleep is when you experience difficulty sleeping at night caused by vivid dreams, body movements, or breathing problems. 

Those are the three kinds of common sleep disorders. Many factors cause sleep disorders, including physical and medical conditions, psychiatric, environmental, or even aging problems. If you are a sleep disorder sufferer, you may see the doctor t get proper treatment.
